Soviet-era military hat, marbles, reclaimed materials
15' x 25' x 5'
This piece was created for the first-ever International School of Kazan (ISK) student and faculty art show. ISK is located in Kazan, the capital of Tatarstan, a republic in Russia known for its fierce individualism and rich cultural heritage. The Tatars have long fought for autonomy from various ruling powers, preserving their identity despite efforts to restrict their language and culture. In celebration of the Tatars' resilience and the fall of their oppressors, the collaborating artists have created The Fall, a kinetic ball sculpture powered by viewers rather than motors. Viewers carry a marble up a staircase and choose from three paths, all leading to the same conclusion: the fall, symbolizing the Tatars' historical struggles and ultimate endurance. The marble comes to rest in a discarded Soviet-era army hat, representing past oppressors' defeat. The Fall blends childhood memories of making and tinkering with the strength and history of the Tatar people, while honoring the Tatars' enduring spirit and encourages contemplation of identity, autonomy, and cultural survival.
